January ended on a very positive and snowy note for all our local skiers, riders and lovers of winter fun! The transition to February marks the halfway point in our winter season, as well as our ski season. Our share of the daily sunlit hours is noticeably longer, and on sunny days that sun has some real heat to it! This is a great time to evaluate how 2014 is going for you; did you resolve to make more time to connect Mind, Body & Spirit this year, did you vow to embark upon a serious routine to strengthen your core and improve your balance and flexibility? At the Pilates Place we are here to help you reach those goals and many others this year. Our studio is a wonderful friendly and supportive environment, with fabulous and committed instructors, in a convenient, sunny location. Read on to find out more about what each of our gifted teachers is up to during 2014, and how this can benefit you and assist you in achieving your health and fitness objectives!
Kristin Painter has been at The Pilates Center of Boulder, taking the second part of her coursework in their Master's Program. The workshop is called BACK TO THE FUTURE; and here is her impression: "I am struck by the energy of the work. There is a rhythm that is determined and precise. Joe taught that to strengthen the body, you must use your muscles. The work was not dance-like, but much more precise and clear. The whole atmosphere has an energy that is alive and as you move you feel your cells respond to this energy. We are not picking the work apart but moving. The skills of teaching are focusing on how to move toward uniform development, not how to fix parts of the body. Each exercise addresses the whole body. This is Joe Pilates' brilliance."
After travels in Turkey and Greece this fall, as well as family Holiday visits, Marisol Sullivan and her fiance have settled into their place in Salt Lake City, where Marisol has begun her coursework at the University and is on her way to attaining her degree in Physical Therapy. We hope to see her in the studio this summer, when she and Josh return to Exum Mountain Guides!
Hilary Smith continues to enjoy the many juxtopositions and beauties of living and teaching abroad in the big Durian! Recently she rafted in a national park (yay to rainy season!), visited world famous temples Borobudur and Prambanan, and ate Gudek Yogya. She remains busy at the Pilates studio with clients from 14 - 80 years but still gets time to enjoy her new JH adventures substitute of Cross-Fit... just not the same as snow and mountains but getting her ready for a big mountain climb in August: a fundraising event up Mt Kinabalu in Malaysia. Selamat Tahun Baru to all at the Pilates Place!
Tina rocked her interview in Salt Lake City in January, and now is now on the waitlist for the Doctor of Physical Therapy program at University of Utah. Once accepted, she will start the program May 12. Send her all your positive thoughts and support! On a fun note, a close friend of Tina's received a permit for the Grand Canyon in March/April and Tina was invited to join the group. This is bound to be a fun, once-in-a-lifetime experience! This month Tina resumes teaching her challenging Pilates Circuit Cross-Fit Class on Thursday mornings at 8:00am, so join this group for a fun, invigorating and super-strengthening class!
This November, Pam and Michele will attend the 14th annual Meeting of the Pilates Method Alliance, in San Diego! Hard to believe that we attended the 2002 Conference over 12 years ago! The PMA conference is a wonderful opportunity to network with other Instructors, explore some new approaches and get refreshed and re-inspired with renewed passion for what we do every day.
A Movement of Movement
Just a quick note about the amazing Pilates Documentary Film, A Movement of Movement which premiered here in Jackson on January 4; this film is sweeping the globe and receiving a groundswell of grass-roots support and enthusiasm from Pilates folks in all walks of life and every country on the planet! Last month there were hugely successful screenings held in Scottsdale and Tucson. For those of you who missed the Wyoming Premier here in Jackson, there will be another screening in Salt Lake City on Saturday, May 3. Just check out the website: http://www.movementofmovement.com/ for more details on upcoming screenings, or stop by the studio and pick up a copy of the DVD!
The brief but fun-filled month of February always reminds us to consider the heart, our own health and the well-being of others comes to mind. The Pilates Place would like to help you shop for your sweetheart or your own healthy needs by offering a huge Valentines SALE on our Pilates accessories. February 13th-17th take 25% off t-shirts, rollers, toe-socks, thera-bands and much much more!
Please note, there will be some studio changes at the end of February. Colleen Downard, who has been operating MoveWell-Gyrotonic and Gyrokinesis will be moving her business out to The Aspens. It's been fun having Colleen in the studio, however all of her Gyrotonic specialized equipment was not able to fit into the space in a way that would enable us to give clients the best possible experience in both Pilates and Gyrotonic. However, we're happy we tried it and wish Colleen the best in The Aspens next to The Teton Sports Club.
